Auto repair in the United States is split between independent shops, dealership service departments and national chains. Independents handle most routine work (oil changes, brakes, tune-ups, check-engine diagnostics) at lower labor rates and often specialize in one make or in imports; dealers keep factory tools, software and warranty authority; chains sell speed and standard pricing on maintenance items. Most shops charge a diagnostic fee, credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and quote parts and labor separately. Certification matters: look for ASE-certified technicians and, in many states, a state repair license posted at the counter. Written estimates are required by law in most states before work begins, and you are entitled to your old parts if you ask.

The business lists hours on 6 days of the week. Typical hours are 8 am–6 pm. It is closed on Sunday. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. The listed phone number is (773) 348-5440. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. Its website is europeanautoltd.net, where you may find menus, price lists or booking options.

On Google it holds a rating of 4.5 out of 5 from 28 reviews, which is a strong result for an auto repair shop in Chicago and suggests consistent service.

Chicago is in Illinois, in the Midwest, where summers are warm, winters are cold and snowy, and most errands are done by car; businesses keep steady year-round hours with the usual holiday changes. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and Chicago follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

"They don't make 'em like they used to," doesn't just apply to the cars here. As stated by other reviewers, Steve & Vic treat their customers like family/friends. Their rare expertise and fascinating anecdotes make them a pleasure to work with. They CARE. Honest, fair, detailed, organized, thorough, above all... passionate! There's a reason people from all over the city/ suburbs have brought their cars to these mechanics for years (generations many cases).

It's been years since I serviced my VW Jetta here but when I lived in Lincoln Park I came here regularly and dealt with a service writer by the name of "Helmut". I've long wondered what happened to him as, again, years ago, I was riding my bicycle home from a rugby tournament and encountered a flat tire at the confluence of Clark, Broadway and Diversey. Helmut saw me walking with my bike over my shoulder and drove me to meet my wife at Addison and Paulina which, I assumed, was out of his way. About a month after this helpful encounter I was transferred to Atlanta for work and never again saw Helmut. Somebody please tell me that he's alive, doing well, and reaping the myriad rewards he so richley deserves.

Love this place. Great mechanics and one of the most characterful parts of the neighborhood.

I have a 1978 Rolls Shadow 2 (purchased new in 1978). Most of the mechanics who have worked on my car have retired through the years and authorized dealers have no clue what to do on these older cars. Also getting parts for my car needs some research and patience (there are a few places here in the states and Europe). I came across European Auto a few years ago and couldn’t be any happier. Steves knowledge and ability is beyond my expectation. I have nothing but praise for his talents. From rebuilding my steering rack, putting in a new, modernizing my air conditioning system (compressor etc) rebuilding the carburetors, straightening out the electrical wiring (to many people through the years have created a few problems). I have read some of the negative comments and nothing has to do with Steves or Vics mechanical experience, just petty gripes. To get an appointment for service could be a few days or a few months (you have to have patience), the shop has a few lifts that always have a car on them sometimes for a week or months, depending on parts availability since he takes on older cars (Ferraris, Jaguars, Mercedes, Rolls, Austin Martins etc) were parts are a headache to get. Not impressed with service. I called two days ahead and gave the make and model of my car to ensure they had the right oil filter. They told me they had the filter, come after 9am and it would be done in about an hour. I got there and they said it would be done about 12pm. Ok, I adjusted. Went back at 11:30 hoping they were done. They didn’t have the right filter, and it would take till 1pm. Ok, I adjusted. Got there and they charged me for oil change an extra $50 for checking tires and brakes. Why was this not disclosed when I dropped the car off? And why was I never given an estimate in the first place? Also told me I need new brakes for an additional almost $2000. Fine, but I won’t be doing it there.
